Food in Sicily

The variety and complexity of the culinary art in Sicily is the result of thousands of years of history, the amassing over the centuries of innumerable different layers of civilization and culture. While Sicilian cuisine is already rich an elaborate in itself, contributions to it from distant places are not to be neglected. There is, in fact, in almost every dish some ingredient from outside the island; the influences may be Greek, Latin, Arab-Norman, Franco-Hispano-Bourbon. The ancient Greek roots of this cuisine, celebrated by various authors of the period (Trimalchio of Syracuse, Atheneus, Archestratus of Gela), are revealed in simple, natural foods consisting basically of very fresh fish and natural herbs, since special spices and condiments still had to be imported. The Greek cuisine remained true to itself during the time of the Roman occupation, when the island was the 'granary' of the Empire. .how to discover Sicily ......more

Palermo is different discover Sicily

What is Palermo?

This eclectic crossroads of Mediterranean and northern European civilization is more than a museum. It's a vibrant --even chaotic-- city whose unique culture has been forged and molded by three millennia of history emerging from three continents. There's no other place on earth like Palermo, more pictures of Palermoand to discover the history of this singular city is to experience something of the diverse worlds that have created something which has evolved into its own culture.
The streets of old Palermo are an intriguing labyrinth of outdoor markets, subtle niches and long-forgotten secrets --almost a subculture unto themselves. After nine centuries street markets still evoke the atmosphere of Arab souks.
Only the Baroque churches and palazzi on the same narrow streets remind you that you're in Italy, but then "Italy" has existed as a modern concept only since the middle of the nineteenth century;
Sicily --ruled from Palermo as a Fatimid emirate and then as a Norman kingdom-- transcends this by many centuries.

von Pismo Beach zum Gaviato State Park

15. Juli  / Maps

Jetzt muß erst einmal Terpentin her

Pismo Beach Kalifornien

14.Juli / Maps

Pismo Beach is the "Clam Capital" of California. The city holds the "Clam Festival" every October, complete with clam chowder competitions and a clam-themed parade. At the southern end of Price Street upon first entering Pismo Beach, a gigantic concrete clam statue greets visitors. Clamming is restricted, due to over-harvesting by humans and the protected sea otter. An 8 inch shell of the Pismo clam (Tivela stultorum) is on display at the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce. In "Ali Baba Bunny", Bugs Bunny and his travelling companion Daffy Duck emerge from a burrow, believing they have arrived at Pismo Beach "and all the clams we can eat" Quelle:Wikipedia
