Goethe once said 'Having visited Italy without seeing Sicily is like not having seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the key to everything'

Sicily was the world’s first multicultural society and today remains Europe’s most historically cosmopolitan region. The land is full of amazing art, archaeological sites, architecture, folklore, breathtaking scenery and of course unbeatable, cheap and delicious foods. This enchanting land was a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese all made Sicily their own at one stage in history leaving behind an eclectic history that you can still touch and see today.

The place where the mountains meet the sea, the island in the sun, Sicily is home to heavenly beaches, rocky coastlines, majestic mountains and Europe's greatest natural wonder, Mount Etna. Sicily's coasts are gold with endless orange and lemon orchards, valleys twirling with renowned vineyards, ancient olive groves, and hardy almond tree orchards where you can pick the fruits right off the trees and eat them fresh.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean basin; around it lays a number of smaller islands such as the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi and the Pelagie islands. Sicily boasts around 1000km of coastline, mostly rocky in the north and sandy in the south. The landscape is varied, prevalently mountains and hilly, but with an expanse of plains around Catania.

In the eastern part of the island Mt Etna (about 3,330 m) is Sicily's highest mountain, the whole of which is a protected area within a national park. It is the biggest volcano in Europe which is still active, erupting annually more or less in the winter time. To view this spectacular is incredible; boiling red hot lava flows down the sides of the snow capped mountains as smoke and ash pours from its mouth. The Southeast corner comprises a series of high plateaus made up of lava, tuff and limestone, featuring a number of impressive gorges carved out by water erosion through the centuries.

Sicily is quite different from the New World or more industrialised societies for a number of reasons; for one it’s slow and relaxed pace of life, which reflects its movement towards a modern society. Secondly, you will find that most Sicilians are warm, generous and fiercely proud of their family and country. Sicilians will insist that they are Sicilian and not Italian.

Der Sunset Boulevard führt uns dann einige Meilen hinunter bis zum Ozean, wieder vorbei an tollen Villen, auch die zum größten Teil hinter sehr viel Grün verborgen, vorbei an sehr viel Verkehr, auf die Strasse nach Malibu Beach

ein Haus am andern an der Oceanside und vom tollen Malibu Strand nichts zu sehen

Juli wir parken auf dem Sunset Boulevard genau vor einem mit echten Raritäten vollgestopften italienischen Autohändler leider akzeptiert die Parkuhr nur eine Stunde und wir müssen uns sputen, wenn wir etwas sehen wollen wir haben doch etwas zu weit entfernt geparkt und als wir endlich auf dem Hollywood Boulevard an den Walk of Fame kommen, ist schon eine halbe Stunde vergangen und wir können uns garnicht in Ruhe alles anschauen. Aber unsere Erwartungen, von dem so berühmten Hollywood Boulevard und dem Bürgersteig mit den Marmor Sternchen, der wie es heißt sechs Tage in der Woche pulliert wird, waren größer, als das was wir sehen, denn außer den mehr als 2000 Marmorsternen glänzt diese Straße nicht besonders so war auf jeden Fall unser Eindruck american dreamroads unterwegs mit einem Wohnmobil in Amerika

über den Mulholland Drive, eine sehr schmale schlecht asphaltierte Straße, die durch viele tiefhängende Bäume für unser Motorhome oft zu einem Problem wurde fahren wir Richtung Hollywood.

Allerdings nicht die vollen 80 Km, die diese berühmte Straße durch die Santa Monica Mountains führt. Wir fahren nur etwa 15 Meilen, aber von dem Panorama haben wir sehr wenig, weil wir besonders arg auf die Straße achten müssen, und von den prächtigen Villen, die sich hier befinden, sehen wir höchstens die Hecken, oder manchmal ganz in der Ferne kann man erahnen, wieviele Reiche hier wohnen müssen .....american dreamroads

von Pismo Beach zum Gaviato State Park

15. Juli den Highway 1 entlang, vorbei an endlosen Anbaufelder geht es weiter in Richtung Sueden, wir sind noch sehr früh dran und deshalb lockt uns das Meer, obwohl unser Campingplatz im Landesinneren liegt.

Wie wir aus Florida schon wissen, ist es immer angenehm in einen State Park zu gehen und gleich der erste Platz, an dem wir an die Küste kommen ist der Gaviato State Park.

Es war leider nicht wie in Florida, der Park war den Eintritt von 8$ absolut nicht wert, schmutzig, ungepflegt, und im Sand Teer, der aber im Sand nicht zu sehen war, sondern erst an den Füßen. Jetzt muß erst einmal Terpentin her

surfen and having fun, wie ueberall an der kalifornischen Kueste wird auch hier surfen ganz gross geschrieben, ansonsten ist das Wasser ziemlich kalt.

Nachdem wir die wunderschoene Kuestenstrasse Big Sur genossen haben finden wir hier einen Campground,

den Holiday RV Park, der aber ein besserer Parkplatz ist, eng eng eng und fuer uns ist unverstaendlich das einige Leute sogar hier leben.

Pismo Beach is the "Clam Capital" of California. The city holds the "Clam Festival" every October, complete with clam chowder competitions and a clam-themed parade. At the southern end of Price Street upon first entering Pismo Beach, a gigantic concrete clam statue greets visitors.
